An NPC ready-mix truck from Margate Quarry delivers wet-batched concrete via a concrete pump at a project near the new South Coast Mall.  The Margate Quarry wet-batch ready-mixed concrete plant is unique on the South Coast.

All concrete is not the same.  The silvery-grey wet concrete that cascades down the chute from ready-mix trucks can be tuned in the batching process to meet a variety of construction industry requirements.  In addition to accurately raising or lowering the concrete’s strength, or MPa level, concrete plants of the wet-batch type, such as the one at NPC’s Margate Quarry, bring consistent quality and efficiency to ready-mixed concrete.

Avi Bhoora, managing director of NPC Concrete, says, “Wet-batched concrete is mixed in the plant itself so it does not rely on the traditional method of mixing of separate ingredients in the drum of the delivery truck.  Another advantage enjoyed by wet-batched concrete plants is the production speed of which they are capable. Our Margate Quarry plant is capable of producing up to 80 cubic metres of ready-mix an hour in peak periods.”

From the laboratory perspective, NPC’s concrete technologist Rolf Schutte adds, “With wet batched concrete, the standard deviation can be expected to be much, much lower which means that the materials are more accurately batched and mixed.  In the mix design process one can more accurately target the desired MPa, while reducing wastage.

The South African Ready-Mix Association (SARMA), the national body which represents all the reputable readymix companies in southern Africa, has given a perfect accreditation score to the NPC Concrete’s plant in Margate.  This means that the ready-mix batching plant has passed SARMA’s requirements and standards regarding environmental, safety and quality issues with full merits.

SARMA’s standards include ensuring that: all ingredients in concrete production are uncontaminated and conform to SABS quality standards and testing.  Batching materials are within a specified tolerance.  Customers are receiving what they actually ordered.
