Well-known South Coast contractor builds holiday multiplex

The latest addition to the line-up of South Coast structures built by Susal Construction is the new 17 unit holiday complex Sea and Sky in Uvongo.  Supervising the construction, which is expected to be completed in January, is Susal foreman Harry Nothnagel.

A 22 year veteran with Susal Construction, Nothnagel has had an opportunity to observe construction industry trends and to form his own conclusions about them. “I ordered the ready-mix boom pump from NPC for pouring this slab because of its efficiency and because, with the boom pump, you can put the ready-mix wherever you want it on the slab.  The boom pump operator is right there by the pour rather than sitting well away at the van by the pump.  He can get on the deck and work the slab pour from the deck itself, which is far more efficient.  The operator can see where the ready-mix is needed and move it in that direction.”

With decades of experience on construction sites behind him, Nothnagel’s comments about concrete usage are also worth noting: “On this particular day, we poured 130 cubes of 25 MPa ready-mix from NPC Concrete for this slab. That’s a lot of concrete and it's preferable to use ready-mix and pour with a concrete pump which is much, much faster than site mix.  I use site mix for smaller things like columns, but time is money, so efficiency is important.”

He continues, “The boom pump is particularly helpful for the slab work.  With it, you have much more control  – something you don’t have with smaller pumps.  Since the boom pump can move as you go and it helps reduce the need for scaffolding on challenging pours.”

How does Nothnagel feel about NPC Concrete overall?  “The consistency of their ready-mix is good and they're always ready to help with information if necessary.  They are good about ready-mix deliveries.  We also get our stone from NPC Aggregate. They always accommodate us one way or another.”
