NPC Concrete Scores Highly in Industry Audit
Tinley Manor’s NPC Concrete plant has earned a prestigious Platinum Plus score (in excess of 95%) from the respected South African Ready-Mix Association (SARMA), the industry self-regulating organisation which annually conducts these audits. The Platinum Plus achievement marks a steady improvement for the North Coast plant which earned Gold and Platinum ratings in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
What does this mean for the North Coast builder? NPC Concrete Tinley Manor Plant Manager Solomon Nkosi explains, “This is a very comprehensive audit that covers everything from our approach to worker safety and environmentally responsible procedures to ready-mix product excellence so it reminds local builders and contractors what they can expect to receive from NPC. It’s not an easy score to achieve so we’re naturally very pleased with the result.”
NPC Concrete Managing Director Avi Bhoora credits a strong team spirit and work ethic at the plant. “Everyone at the plant working together is the reason for this success. It’s a good morale builder and it shows our clients that everyone here is pulling in the same direction.”
Ready-mix product quality at NPC’s Tinley Manor plant has been augmented by the company’s investment in a wet-batching concrete system. Unlike typical mixed concrete which is mixed in the truck itself, wet batched concrete, also known as central mixed or pre-mixed concrete, is produced under more controlled conditions. Wet-batched concrete goes into the delivery trucks “wet”, i.e. already mixed with all ingredients including water. NPC Concrete Technician Rolf Schutte says, “With wet batched concrete the standard deviation can be expected to be much lower which means that the materials are more accurately batched and mixed. In the mix design process, one can more accurately target the desired strength (MPa), while reducing wastage.”
