Does Your Concrete Supplier comply with External Quality Checks?

Why should it matter to you whether your concrete supplier is a committed SARMA member, or not?   If your ready-mix supplier is a SARMA member it means that a voluntary commitment to SARMA standards and ethics has been made.  The proof of that commitment is reflected in the score your supplier earns in the annual SARMA audits to which each member concrete plant is subjected.

In its quality checks, SARMA, the South African Ready-Mix Association, looks into each plant’s process of concrete manufacture.   Also of interest during a SARMA audit is the condition of measuring equipment and tools as well as the procedures and equipment for proper sampling and testing.  All of these issues are important and over a period of time can be expected to reflect themselves in the quality and success of your pours.

If your concrete supplier is a SARMA member you have a right to know how well your supplier has scored on SARMA audits.   The overall SARMA audit score also includes marks for making the safety and health of plant employees a very high priority and for avoidance of harm to the environment by operating responsibly both at the plant and on the road.

Here in Southern KZN, the NPC Concrete plant in Margate Quarry achieved a 100 % score for quality in their 2010 SARMA audit and 91,2 % overall score, resulting in a Platinum audit certificate.  The NPC Park Rynie concrete plant achieved 99,4 % for quality and a gold certificate overall.

NPC Concrete Margate Plant Manager Jaco Bezuidenhout says, “This is a very comprehensive audit that covers everything from our approach to worker safety and environmentally responsible procedures to ready-mix product excellence, so it reminds local builders and contractors what they can expect to receive from NPC Concrete.   It’s not an easy score to achieve and comes through hard work and commitment from NPC staff . This is to ensure customer satisfaction at the end of every pour, big or small.”
